ORICO has recently released the Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD Enclosure RAID with PM/Raid0/Raid1/JBOD Mode and USB3.1 Gen2 Type C 10Gbps B-Key/B+M Key Solid State Drive Case Adapter for SSD Size 2230/2242/2260/2280 Support UASP-M2N210. It is an affordable and efficient solution to store and access a large amount of data securely. I got the chance to test and use this enclosure, and here is my in-depth review.

Design and Build Quality:

The ORICO Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure has an all-aluminum alloy body that looks sleek and modern. It has a compact form factor, which is smaller than a mobile phone, making it portable and easy to carry. The dual-bay design is very useful to store and access multiple SSDs at the same time. It also has an LED indicator that shows the working status of the hard disk at any time.

Installation:

The installation process of the ORICO Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure is straightforward and hassle-free. You need to open the top cover of the enclosure, insert the SSDs, screw them in place, and then close the cover. The SSDs are held securely in place, and there is no danger of them falling out. The enclosure does not require any drives or software to function, making it a plug-and-play device.

Modes:

The ORICO Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure has four modes- PM mode, RAID0 acceleration mode, RAID1 mirroring mode, and JBOD combined mode. PM mode allows for normal operation of the SSDs independently. RAID0 provides faster read and write speeds by distributing the data across both SSDs. RAID1 provides data redundancy by mirroring the data onto both SSDs. JBOD combined mode allows both SSDs to function as a single large drive. Switching between these modes is simple and can be done using the sliding button on the enclosure.

Speed:

The ORICO Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure is equipped with a USB 3.1 Gen2 output interface, which supports up to 10Gbps transfer speeds. It also supports the UASP acceleration protocol, which ensures faster transfer speeds. I tested the speed using a 3GB compressed file, and it only took 2-5 seconds to transfer the file. The theoretical maximum transfer rate of the SATA protocol SSD is 6Gbps. Therefore, the enclosure operates at a higher speed than the SATA protocol.

Compatibility:

The ORICO Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure is compatible with a wide range of operating systems, including Windows, MAC OS, and Linux. It comes with two cables, one USB-A to USB-C cable and one USB-C to USB-C cable, making it possible to connect to most devices, including smartphones, computers, TVs, XBOX, PS4, PS5, and cameras.

Safety and Portability:

The all-aluminum alloy body of the ORICO Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure provides excellent heat dissipation and keeps the SSDs safe from external damage. It also supports smart hibernation technology that enters hibernation mode after 10 minutes of inactivity, extending the life of the hard disk. It does not require a power adapter, making it portable and easy to carry.

Customer Reviews:

On Amazon, ORICO Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure has a customer rating of 3.6 out of 5 stars, based on 53 reviews. The majority of the customers are happy with the enclosure's price, build quality, and ease of installation. However, some customers have found issues with the device being unable to detect one or both SSDs, while others have reported the enclosure becoming too hot during use.

Conclusion:

Overall, ORICO has produced an excellent product in the Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure. It is an affordable and efficient solution to store and access a large amount of data securely. The dual-bay design, along with various modes, make it versatile, and the speed and compatibility make it a suitable device for most work environments. Despite a few customer complaints, I would highly recommend the ORICO Dual Bay M.2 SATA SSD enclosure. It is a budget-friendly device that provides excellent value for money.
